Harbour Island, located just off the northwestern coast of Eleuthera in the Bahamas has a resident population of 1,500. Dunmore Town, the centre of Harbour Island, was the first capital of the Bahamas and is one of the oldest settlements in the Bahamas. The settlement was founded over 300 years ago by Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution and is known for its picturesque buildings with old colonial architecture and charm. Many of the wooden or clapboard houses with decorative fretwork date back to 1790.
Harbour Island is one of the most popular resort islands in the Bahamas with an excellent return visitor percentage. There are numerous restaurants, shops and nightclubs. Several marinas in the protected harbor offer full services and can accommodate very large water craft. Water sports are excellent with fishing, snorkeling, water skiing and scuba diving all available. The spectacular three-mile pink sands beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas and was recently listed by Caribbean Travel & Life as one of the ten most exception beaches in the Caribbean. Harbour Island was also named the #1 Caribbean destination in 2005 by readers of Travel & Leisure Magazine.
Other facilities offered are a bank, port of entry with customs office, schools, churches, medical clinic and government dock. The nearest landing strip is in North Eleuthera, accessible only by water taxi from Harbour Island.
Tree House is a single-family home with a guest cottage in an enclosed enclave which provides a tremendous amount of privacy. The main house consists of one queen-size bedroom with bath and a sitting room with a view of the harbor on the second floor and a beautiful dining room, full kitchen and bathroom on the first. The main house also has a full laundry and storage room.
The guest cottage is a three-storied building which consists of two twin-sized bedrooms with a shared bath on the ground level (under the verandah), galley-style kitchen, queen-sized bedroom with adjoining bathroom, dining room, living room and covered verandah (576 sq. ft.) on the first floor, one twin-sized bedroom and bath on the second floor and a small alcove overlooking the verandah.
Special features include French-style windows and doors, pedestal basins in the bathrooms and trayed ceilings in the bedroom as well as louvred designed kitchen cabinetry, timbered ceilings and wood hanging hurricane shutters and three dormer windows. Both houses are air conditioned and have ceiling fans. Cable TV is available and there is wireless internet. There is a US phone line as well as a Caribbean exchange available.
The verandah is a very special spot at Tree House - it is covered and very large and has many seating areas so whether you want to read, dine or nap or cocktail there is a spot for you. It is also a spot where you can remain outside in the case of inclement weather (God forbid); and as I mentioned before, and I can't emphasize enough, the sunsets are magnificent!
The house employs a full-time housekeeper and a caretaker both of whom would be available to the guests (compensation is expected). The housekeeper can prepare simple Caribbean fare and the caretaker can provide fresh fish and boating if desired. Housekeeping is provided daily which includes laundry.
Beach chairs/beach umbrellas/beach towels are all available to the guests.
Golf carts can be rented for travel and can be done through the housekeeper prior to arrival. If guests would like the refrigerator stocked prior to their arrival that service is also available.
If requested, a caretaker can meet guests at the North Eleuthera airport and accompany them to Tree House - this is not really necessary but a nice touch. Tree House is located within walking distance of the dock where the water taxi stops.
